TOY SOY — **Congratulations to the Mandeville High School 2024 Teacher of the Year, Laura Biguenet and Student of the Year, Hannah Bradley!**

Dual Enrollment is a program that allows eligible high school students, currently attending St. Tammany Parish public or private schools, to concurrently enroll in a college course. The credits that students earn will be eligible towards both a high school diploma and college credit.

To be eligible for the Early Start/Dual Enrollment Program, a student must be 16 years old, classified as a junior or senior, and have taken the PreACT or ACT with a Composite score accepted at the respective post-secondary institutions.

Louisiana TOPS University Curriculum

THE successful completion of the Louisiana TOPS University Diploma Curriculum requires a minimum of 24 units in specific courses as detailed in this course description guide. Students who successfully complete this curriculum will have completed the minimum required curriculum as a component of TOPS eligibility as well as Louisiana public university freshman entrance requirements. Eligibility for TOPS as well as entrance to Louisiana public universities also relies on earning a minimum required GPA as well as minimum required ACT composite scores and sub-scores.

Louisiana TOPS Tech Career Curriculum

TOPS TECH is the state’s new initiative for school districts, colleges, and businesses to collaborate in providing career courses and workplace experiences to high school students, allowing them to continue their education after high school, certifying them for career fields most likely to lead to high-wage jobs. A parent or guardian must sign and file a written statement with the school asserting their consent to the student graduating without completing the TOPS University Diploma Curriculum.

While in high school, participating students will be provided more time during the school day to achieve industry certificates or college credentials in addition to their high school diplomas. These credentials will qualify graduates to continue their studies after high school at a Community or Technical College OR to launch a career upon graduating. Students completing the TOPS TECH Career Curriculum must complete a TOPS TECH Pathway of 9 pathway credits, with a total of 23 high school credits, an industry based certification for the chosen pathway, and pass 3 of the 6 LEAP 2025 tests to earn a high school diploma.

Local Graduation Requirements

Since a seven-period day schedule has been funded to enhance educational opportunities for high school students, it is the intent of the St. Tammany Parish School district to have students complete four full years of a high school education. Seniors are required to enroll in five (5) classes for credit during both semesters of their senior year.

It is strongly recommended that students who wish to get an early start in college participate in concurrent enrollment or Early Start/Dual Enrollment courses.

Weighted Courses

Weighted grades apply to English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in designated courses of honors, gifted, Advanced Placement, and articulated, non-remedial college courses. A notation will appear on the transcript to indicate which courses were weighted. Senior Exam Exemption Policy

STPPS Senior Exam Exemption Policy

If a Senior with an “A average” in a course and 5 or fewer non-exempt absences in the course for a semester, then exempt from the semester exam.

If a Senior with a “B average” in a course and 3 or fewer non-exempt absences in the course for a semester, then exempt from the semester exam.

*Senior Semester Exam Exemptions will not apply in dual enrollment courses and online courses.*

Types of Absences

Exempted, Excused Absences are those that allow the student to make up work and will not be counted against students in determining whether a student meets attendance requirements. There is no limit to the amount of exempted, excused absences a student can incur.

The exempted, excused absences are defined in the attendance policy as the following:

· Extended personal physical or emotional illness as verified by a physician or nurse practitioner licensed in the state.

· Extended hospital stay as verified by a physician or nurse practitioner licensed in the state.

· Extended recuperation from an accident as verified by a physician or nurse practitioner licensed in the state.

· Extended contagious disease within a family in which a student is absent as verified by a dentist or physician licensed in the state.

· Observance of special and recognized holidays of the student’s own faith with documentation provided.

· Visitation with an immediate family member who is a member of the United States Armed Forces or the National Guard of a state and such immediate family member has been called to duty for or is on leave from overseas deployment to a combat zone or combat support posting with proper documentation. These absences shall not exceed five days per school year.

· Travel for educational purposes. These absences must be approved prior to the travel with the supporting documentation submitted to the principal. Verification of the educational experience must be submitted upon return to school.

· Death in the immediate family with documentation. These absences shall not exceed five days.

· National catastrophe and/or disaster.

Non-Exempted Excused Absences are those incurred due to personal illness or serious illness in the family documented by parental notes. These absences allow the student to make up work missed and are considered in determining whether the student meets attendance requirements. Non-exempt excused absences will be treated as unexcused absences as it regards to seat time.

Unexcused Absences are absences where a note is not provided to the principal, a note is provided outside of the specified time (within two (2) days of returning from absence), or fails to meet the criteria to be excused. Students are not allowed to make up work for grading purposes and will be given failing grades for those days missed. These absences count against the student when determining whether the student meets attendance requirements.

Suspensions are non-exempted absences. Students are allowed to make up work when suspended from school. The student shall receive the same credit originally available for such work if it is completed satisfactorily and timely as determined by the principal or the principal’s designee, upon recommendation of the student’s teacher. These absences count against the student when determining whether the student meets attendance requirements.

Absences Procedures

Excuses for all absences must be presented in writing to the school principal or designee within two (2) days of the absence. The note must include the student’s full name, days of absence, reason for absence and/or doctor’s verification, parent/guardian signature and date of signature. Failure to send the note will result in the student not being able to make up missed coursework, and zeros for that work will be given.

In high school, when a student accumulates three (3) absences in a semester which include non-exempted excused, unexcused, and/or suspensions, notification will be made to the parents/guardians. After the fifth ( 5) absence in a semester which includes non-exempted excused, unexcused, and/or suspensions, the school will notify parents/guardians of the seat time recovery requirements.

Seat Time Recovery Requirement

Students in danger of failing due to excessive absences may be allowed to make up missed seat time held outside of the regular school day. The makeup sessions must be completed before the end of the current semester for high school students and the end of the year for elementary/junior high students.

Truancy

Parents will receive notification of the State truancy policy at the beginning of the school year. Any juvenile student who is habitually absent or tardy from school will be reported as a truant child to the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance, the family and/or juvenile court according to the provisions of Louisiana Children’s Code regarding families in need of services.

Automotive Technology

The class is designed to introduce students to shop operations, customer relations, flat rate manuals, safety, organizational design, pay structure, equipment, tools, and basic operational theories. Topics include the proper use of hand tools, measuring instruments, equipment; service procedures for lubrication, batteries, the cooling system, wheels and tires. Students will take the ASE Automobile Service Technology exam at the end of the course.

CONSTRUCTION INTERN

The class is designed to introduce students to the field of commercial architecture and construction. Students will work with historical building plans, attend at least one project meeting and visit at least one current construction job site. Students will also assist with Construction Department office tasks such as filing, organizing the library of historical documents and other project related tasks.

Students will work daily at the St. Tammany Parish Public Schools Central Office in Covington. Students will work Monday through Thursday, June 5 – June 28 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 pm. Students will learn virtually on Friday, June 9, 16, and 23. Students will earn a full Carnegie credit in Internship.

2013 ABA PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM AWARD RECIPIENT
June 12, 2023 - June 30, 2023

The three-week program will be held at the Louisiana Bar Center and is scheduled on June 12, 2023 - June 30,
2023. Students who complete the program will be eligible for a stipend of up to $250.00! Students must
provide their own transportation to the program. Students have the option of paying a residential housing fee if
housing is needed (adult chaperone required). The estimated housing cost for three-weeks is $1,080 and

Over the course of the three-week program, students will be introduced to lawyers, legal documents, and the
legal system, all designed to assist them in pondering one important question, 1100 I really want to be a lawyer?"
Inside the "Suit Up classroom," students will experience the Socratic teaching method and gain exposure to
specified law school courses, including, criminal law and legal research and writing. Students will also receive a
mock trial problem, which will serve as the basis for the legal writing assignment and oral argument the students
will present to a panel of judges at the end of the program.
In a second component of the "Suit Up classroom," students will be provided with advice and substantive
information from guest speakers, and receive instruction in creating competitive resumes, preparing for the Law
School Admission Test (LSAT), professionalism, ethics, and workplace etiquette and attire. The time inside the
classroom will provide students with ample time to work as a group on assignments and seek feedback from
various legal mentors throughout the course.
A third facet of the course will allow Suit Up participants to step outside the classroom and see first-hand
what it means to be a "lawyer." The attorney shadowing is designed to provide students with the following
experiences: (1) a tour of the law firm/agency, including all departments, so that students gain an
understanding of all of the support staff that comprise a law firm/agency; (2) the opportunity to join the
attorney on outings (such as depositions, hearings, and trials); (3) lunch with the attorney; and (4) mentoring
and support on the oral argument and supporting legal memorandum being developed by the student. Students
will also prepare a list of questions to ask attorneys whom they shadow so that the student gains an appreciation
of the day-to-day schedule of an attorney, as well as the role that lawyers play in society and in the administration
of justice. *Students must have transportation to and from the shadowing assignment.
Finally, the Suit Up students will attend several field trips. The students will tour two area law schools, the
Louisiana Supreme Court, the Court museum, and federal court buildings. During the tours, students will hear
from several guest speakers and may have the opportunity to view proceeding sat several state and federal courts.

There is an online application process. Students will be requested to provide: a copy of their last Report Card or
Progress Report (an official transcript is not required); one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor,
