Mr. Sean Esker is the senior guidance counselor.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS & ADMISSIONS – Mr. Esker is available to assist each senior in formulating his or her plans. Seniors are encouraged to be responsible for these plans by completing their own applications, requesting letters of recommendation in advance, requesting transcripts at least one working day in advance, and registering for college admission tests. Senior schedules are very busy; however, part of the college prep program is learning to manage time and set priorities. Our mutual goal is to produce successful, independent young adults.

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS – Transcripts are $1.00 each. Requests must be made in writing with the Registrar in the guidance office at least one working day in advance. MHS does not send test scores with the transcript.

CORRESPONDENCE COURSES – Seniors are reminded that all correspondence lessons and exams must be completed by April 15, 2008 if they plan to be a
May 2008 graduate.

ACT AND SAT TESTING – Seniors should take at least one of these college admissions tests. The April ACT test date of a student's senior year is the latest test date for a student to achieve the minimum score required by TOPS without penalty. If a senior achieves the minimum score required by TOPS at the June testing, then he or she is penalized one semester of TOPS eligibility. Students may sign up online for the ACT at www.actstudent.org or for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com .

Students must submit official test scores to each college or university to which they apply. Official test scores come from the testing agency (either ACT or SAT). Registration for the tests includes a space to send up to four test scores from each testing date. If a student needs to send an additional score report, they may be ordered at www.actstudent.org or www.collegeboard.com for a fee.

FAFSA - The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is for parents to complete based upon their 2007 income. The completed information cannot be submitted until after January 1, 2008. FAFSA applications may be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov . The only application for the TOPS scholarship program is the completion of the FAFSA.

TOPS – Louisiana's Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) requires successful completion of the TOPS core curriculum (currently 17.5 courses for the class of 2008 and subsequent classes), a minimum 2.50 GPA in those core courses, and a minimum ACT score of 20.

The only application for the TOPS scholarship is the FAFSA. The FAFSA should be filed by the TOPS priority deadline of May 1, 2008 and must be filed by July 1, 2008 in order to avoid penalties.

Students must send their ACT scores to the TOPS office by including the TOPS code (1595) when filling out an application for ACT testing. It is imperative that students correctly include the Mandeville High School code (191-660) on their ACT registration.

Brochures describing the TOPS program are available in the Guidance Office. LOSFA may be contacted at www.osfa.state.la.us or at 1-800-259-5626 ext 1012.

GEE TESTING – All seniors must have successfully completed the English Language Arts, mathematics, and science or social studies exams in order to receive a high school diploma. Seniors who need one or more of these tests will be given a testing opportunity in October and in February in order to attempt to meet May graduation deadlines.
